The Motherhood Penalty in the Law: How it Impacts Everyone and Ways to Change it

Date:  3/9/2022

Time:  Noon via Zoom

Speakers: Michelle Browning Coughlin, JD, MSW.

Credit:  One hour Elimination of Bias

Despite greater than 50% of law school students identifying as female, women continue to be vastly underrepresented in the legal profession.  Research indicates that the “motherhood penalty” plays a critical role in this continued underrepresentation and pay inequity for women in all careers, including the legal profession.  Women, whether they have or even want children, can be subjected to the motherhood bias based on assumptions and biases of others.  Men, while often gaining a career and salary “fatherhood bonus,” are also harmed by the motherhood penalty due to cultural expectations that men “should” be the breadwinner and “should not” be primary caregivers. Michelle will discuss some of the systemic changes legal employers and leaders in the profession can make to both raise awareness of, and reduce the impact of, motherhood penalty in the law. Michelle is the Founder of MothersEsquire and author of My Mom, the Lawyer.
